Bitten off more than we could chew

I’ve not managed to update in a while, mainly because I’ve not known what to write, and because I’m lazy. So here goes.

As of early January, Rob, our writer, has decided that it is best to leave the team. He feels that he needs to further his skills before he can start on a project with us, which is understandable. All the best to Rob.

Now, there is only three! Me, Leon and Dan.

After our little struggle with trying to map out a big story for a adventure point and click game, we realised something; Our ambitions were way too big. Having a great idea is one thing, but making it is another – especially when you’ve never made a game. I’ve been learning a lot about video game design, (all thanks to the wonderful Extracreditz on Youtube) and I’ve realised that we need to take a different approach.

Instead of a big project, we’ve decided to start small, by making little games that use certain functions. An example would be: A small scene in which the character can run around in and shoot targets (this we are thinking about). So the goal is to make things that work, as that is the most important thing right now.

What have we been up to you say?

Leon has been playing around in Unity and has made his very own FPS engine, which is fantastic. He’s learnt a lot over the past month, such as the physics of the character and objects, lighting, mapping textures and ambient occlusion. All of which looks pretty nifty!

Dan has been working his ass off; He’s been learning C++ and attempting to learn GUI’s in Unity. Recently he made a small console based game which was inspired by FTL (Faster Than Light) and I love it! It’s a small game about making several hyperspace jumps through space to get home, in which you are limited on fuel and things go wrong. He’s starting to show his true colours and is a fast learner.

I have a lot of trust in those two and there capabilities. Even if they can’t do something, they’ll go and learn it. Good to be working with you guys.

As for me, I’ve been practising textures even more! I will make another post just for this, as I’d like to explain them.

Cheerio!
